1: The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2: Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; 3: And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram; 4: And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; 5: And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; 6: And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; 7: And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; 8: And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; 9: And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; 10: And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; 11: And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: 12: And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; 13: And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; 14: And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; 15: And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; 16: And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17: So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. 18: Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19: Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20: But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21: And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22: Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23: Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24: Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

In this first Chapter Matthew presents the credentials of the Messiah of Israel. He is ‘Son of David’ (The most common title) and ‘Son of Abraham’. In the first Part of Matthews Gospel and the first part of Christ’s ministry Jesus is presented as ‘Son of David’. He has the right to sit on David’s throne. The ‘son of David’ was Solomon - the greatest king of Israel. Solomon was the richest and wisest King to live on earth. Jesus simply says of himself a Greater than Solomon is here. Christ was greater in wisdom in that he answers without any difficulty all of the questions of the Rabbis. Even his enemies said of Him has any man spoken like this man? When he has answered ever question he asks one of his own and everyone is silenced. His question was how can David’s son be his Lord? There was no answer from the Rabbis of Israel. And the answer of course is? David’s Son – Jesus Christ is David’s LORD. Christ as David’s son has All authority In heaven and on earth. The Second part of Christ’s ministry displays the fact that Christ is ‘Son of Abraham’. The ‘son of Abraham’ was Isaac. The Lord Jesus learned obedience by the things that he suffered. He was willing to be led up Moriah’s hill. And he was willing to do something against his own will. He was willing to be laid upon the wood of sacrifice. The only difference was that for Isaac there was a substitute.
Matthew is very clear that Mary was a virgin. He says that she was betrothed but ‘Before they came together’ she was found to be with child. Joseph’s reaction as a righteous man was to divorce her on the grounds of impurity but while he thought about it an angel appears to tell him that she is not impure but that this is the work of God and that his sole responsibility is to marry her and to name the child - Jesus. Joseph took Mary as his wife but did not ‘know her’ until after the birth of her son and he named the child Jesus.

A The Present

1v1-5 The Love of God for Israel

1: The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi. 2: I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob, 3: And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. 4: Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever. 5: And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Israel.

1v6-2v9 The Priests rebuked for profanity

6: A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? 7: Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible. 8: And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts. 9: And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the LORD of hosts. 10: Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand. 11: For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts. 12: But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible. 13: Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD. 14: But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the LORD a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.

Malachi, 2

1: And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you. 2: If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. 3: Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it. 4: And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. 5: My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name. 6: The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity. 7: For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. 8: But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. 9: Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.

2v10-17 The People rebuked for social sin

10: Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? 11: Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god. 12: The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts. 13: And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand. 14: Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 15: And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. 16: For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. 17: Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?

Malachi, 3

B The Future

3v1-6 The Two Messengers

1: Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to this temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. 2: But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: 3: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. 4: Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years. 5: And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. 6: For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

3v7-18 The People rebuked - Religious sins

7: Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? 8: Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9: Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. 10: Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. 11: And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. 12: And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts. 13: Your words have been stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? 14: Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts? 15: And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered. 16: Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. 17: And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. 18: Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

Malachi, 4

4v1-6 The Day of the LORD

1: For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. 2: But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. 3: And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts. 4: Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. 5: Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: 6: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.


The prophecy of Malachi has a very clear message, which is that the day of the LORD is coming. All of the OT prophets have had this theme in one way or another. This little book of only 4 chapters was written by the prophet Malachi in 430 BC. Malachi wrote to confront the people of Judah with their sins and to tell them of the love of God if they repented. It was written to the southern kingdom of Judah. This is last book in the Christian OT however it is not the last book in the Hebrew OT. 2 Chronicles is the last book in the Hebrew OT. Malachi announced the coming of John the Baptist (3v1) and the coming of Christ (3v1). Malachi prophesied to a people who were as hard as sin could make men. The prophecy of Malachi could be described as having two themes the present state of the Lords people, Israel and the future of Israel in the Messianic kingdom. Malachi begins by unburdening himself of the message of the Lord. He says the Lord says to Israel l have loved you yet you say has the Lord loved us? The Lord responds saying that Jacob had a brother Esau, yet the Lord only loved Jacob and hated Esau. The Lord made the inheritance of Esau waste land and a place for demons. Esau’s descendants will build in the desert but the Lord will destroy their palaces and the place will be uninhabited forever. Then the Lord brings another charge against Israel. He says a son honours his father and even a servant honours his master. Then he says If l am your father where is the honour that is my due? And if l am your master where is your respect? Then the Lord says you priests despise my name. (Notice that the Lords prayer begins Hallowed be thy name) The priests say how have we despised your name and the Lord answers you have polluted bread on the altar. The priests had made the table of the Lord an object of contempt. The priests were offering blind animals and lame animals for sacrifice. This was an evil thing before the Lord. The Lord says l will have no pleasure in your worship and l will not accept it from you. These are serious charges and they give a clue as to why the Lord is silent to Israel for 400 years from Malachi to John the Baptist. When John came he found a nation far from their God and full of sickness and impoverished and occupied by the Roman legions. Yet John was unable to bring about any real change. He called on the people to return to their God but it was not until Christ’s ministry that real restoration was possible. He only could forgive their sins and heal their backslidings. Malachi continues, There will come a day when from the rising of the sun to the going down of the sun the Lords name will be praised in all the earth and in every nation incense will be offered to the Lord’s name. It will be a pure offering and the name of the Lord will be great in the heathen nations. The Lord says that he will curse their blessings. The priests who should have kept the whole law have only kept part of it. Israel is in a sorry state they ask all innocently what have we done yet the Lord replies you have done evil in my sight. In chapter 3 Malachi begins to focus on the future he speaks of the ministry of John the Baptist. He will be sent by the Lord to prepare the way for the coming Messiah to Israel. Malachi describes Christ’s ministry as coming in judgment. Yet we know that when Christ came he came not to condemn or judge but to save, therefore Malachi has in mind a future day when Christ will come to his temple to execute judgment on the children of Israel. John said l baptise with water but he will baptise with fire. Christ will purify the sons of Judah that they might offer sacrifices of holiness to the Lord. Christ will bring judgment on evil doers and justice in Israel. The message of the Lord is, Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. This explains the wording of John and Christs and the Apostolic message, Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. It is not a general call to salvation as Christians experience it but it is a call specifically to Israel to return unto the Lord their God so that he would then return to them. Still Israel complains of their innocence and the Lord continues to explain their sin. They say when did we rob you? And the Lord replies in tithes and offerings. Then the Lord issues this wonderful challenge to Israel. He says bring all your tithes into the storehouse and prove me now. Test me O Israel to see if l will not open the windows of heaven and pour out on you a blessing that you will not have room enough to receive it. Then every nation will call you blessed. The Lord says, you have said strong words against me, you have said what is the point of keeping the law? Yet there were few that feared the Lord and l will keep a book of remembrance of those who fear me. They will be mine in the day when l take up my precious ones. Lastly Malachi speaks of the day of the Lord. He says a day will come which will burn like an oven. It will be a time of destruction of the proud and the wicked. But to those who fear the Lord the Sun of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings and he will tread down the wicked. He says remember the law of Moses my servant and do it! Then Malachi says The Lord will send Elijah my prophet (resurrected from the dead). Before the great and terrible day of the Lord and he will bring a restoration in the family because if not l will smite the earth with a curse. And so ends the Old Testament. And the Children of Israel waited for 400 years until a man appeared in the wilderness of Judea calling, Repent for the kingdom of God is near.

1: And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2: In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3: And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: 4: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. 5: And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. 6: And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. 7: Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book. 8: And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9: Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. 10: And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. 11: He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. 12: And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. 13: I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 14: Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15: For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. 16: I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. 17: And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. 18: For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20: He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. 21: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

And so we come to the last chapter of the NT. John is still describing the New Jerusalem. He describes the clear water of the river. He sees the tree of life which bears twelve types of fruit every month. And whose leaves bring health to the nations. On this earth there is no curse.
Lastly John brings his book to an end with an affirmation of the truth of its prophesies. He also states that Gods blessing rests on those who read this book. John is told specifically not to seal this book because the days for its fulfilment are near. And so the book ends with a person message from Christ himself, in which he promises not to delay his coming. The invitation of Christ is whosoever will tell him take of the water of life freely. Then comes blessings and curses on the readers of this book.

1: The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. 2: Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. 3: And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. 4: In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness. 5: And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God. 6: In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. 7: The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. 8: In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them. 9: And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. 10: And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. 11: In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. 12: And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; 13: The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart; 14: All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.

Zechariah, 13

1: In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. 2: And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land. 3: And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth. 4: And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive: 5: But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth. 6: And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? 1: Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. 2: For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3: Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. 4: And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. 5: And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. 6: And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: 7: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. 8: And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. 9: And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one. 10: All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king's winepresses. 11: And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited. 12: And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. 13: And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour. 14: And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance. 15: And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague. 16: And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. 17: And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. 18: And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. 19: This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. 20: In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD's house shall be like the bowl's before the altar. 21: Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.


In the last three chapters of Zechariah the prophet records no less outstanding prophesies that previously. The prophesies regarding his first coming are understood to be literal and specific. The prophesies regarding his second coming are also to be understood to be literal and specific. It will be noted however that some prophesies are little understood until the time of their fulfilment. These prophesies regarding Christ’s second coming are given against the background of a God who stretched out the starry heavens and who made the foundations of the earth. He is the one who gave every man a spirit. The Lord says l will make Jerusalem the source of fear to all the nations around her. All those who come against Jerusalem will be totally destroyed. The people of Jerusalem will find their strength in the Lord their God. The Lord himself will defend the children of Israel. And even the weak will be as mighty as David. In the day when all the nations will rise against Israel the Lord will give a spirit of grace and prayer to them and they will see Christ as the one who they crucified. And they will mourn like the mourning of the loss of an only child. They will have great bereavement like that of a firstborn. All and every Israelite will mourn. There will be a general and great revival beginning with great fear and trembling and sorrow before God. On that day there will be a fountain opened to the house of David and to all who live in Jerusalem. It will be a fountain opened for sin and uncleanness. All Idols will cease forever in Israel. There will never again be spiritual adultery before the Lord. None will allow a false prophet to live in the land. Two thirds of the land will perish but the third will come through as through fire. They will be refined like silver and gold. They will call on the name of the Lord their God and he will hear them. And then there is this beautiful exchange – The Lord will say, You are my people. And they will reply, The Lord Jehovah is my God. Next Zechariah turns his focus on the day of the LORD. This is the great battle when all nations will gather against Jerusalem. Christ said of this time, You will be hated of all nations because of me. There will be battle, looting and rape and the people will be taken in servitude but the Lord will stand on the mountain of Olives (Where the Garden of Gethsemane was) And the mountain will divide causing a canyon lying east west. Men will flee and there will be no night or day. And living waters will flow out of Jerusalem half to the Dead Sea and half to the Mediterranean Sea. In that day the LORD will be king over the whole earth. The central part of Israel will be raised up the highest mountain in the earth and those who fought against Jerusalem will perish where they stand, including all their beasts. Those who do not die will every year go to Jerusalem to worship the King the Lord of Hosts. Those who refuse to go up to Jerusalem to worship the Lord will have no rain the following year. They will go to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. It seems that Egypt will initially refuse to celebrate Tabernacles yet afterwards they will go. These prophesies are not only remarkable they are amazingly detailed. Zechariah says that the horses will have bells the inscription HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD. This will also be written on pots too in the house of the LORD. In fact every pot in all Israel will carry this inscription. There will never again be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts. There are some that mock at prophecy, yet we know that the 30 pieces of silver came to true exactly as foretold and so it will be with the inscriptions on the bells and pots - HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD.

Now we come to a very exciting part of Revelation. All that are wicked are removed for ever and God now begins to do something very new. God will make a new heaven and a new earth. The new earth will have no sea. Then John sees the New Jerusalem coming down from heaven to earth. God himself will dwell with men. There will be no more tears. No pain or sorrow Everything previous will have passed away. The wicked will not have ceased to exist but they are confined forever in the lake of fire. Then John is introduced to the Lamb the wife of the lamb (This is Israel) then John sees the New Jerusalem. Glorious in beauty and riches. Gold and precious stones. 1500 miles cubed. The city will have no temple and no sun or moon will shine upon it and there is no night time. The Lamb himself is the light. The nations will walk in the light and the Kings will bring their honour to it. The City will be holy.

9v1-11v17 First burden 1st Coming of Christ

Zechariah, 10

Zechariah, 11

1: Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars. 2: Howl, fir tree; for the cedar is fallen; because the mighty are spoiled: howl, O ye oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage is come down. 3: There is a voice of the howling of the shepherds; for their glory is spoiled: a voice of the roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is spoiled. 4: Thus saith the LORD my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter; 5: Whose possessors slay them, and hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich: and their own shepherds pity them not. 6: For I will no more pity the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD: but, lo, I will deliver the men every one into his neighbour's hand, and into the hand of his king: and they shall smite the land, and out of their hand I will not deliver them. 7: And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock. And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock. 8: Three shepherds also I cut off in one month; and my soul lothed them, and their soul also abhorred me. 9: Then said I, I will not feed you: that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another. 10: And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it assunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the people. 11: And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the LORD. 12: And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. 13: And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD. 14: Then I cut asunder mine other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. 15: And the LORD said unto me, Take unto thee yet the instruments of a foolish shepherd. 16: For, lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not visit those that be cut off, neither shall seek the young one, nor heal that that is broken, nor feed that that standeth still: but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces. 17: Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.


In the next few chapters Zechariah brings forward a number of prophesies that we today find astounding and they all relate to the first coming of Christ. In the early part of the chapter he brings lots of prophesies which at the present time are obscure. However in verse 9 he says rejoice greatly O daughter of Zion then he says Shout O daughter of Jerusalem But why? And the answer comes – Look! Your king comes to you, he is just and he has salvation and he is lowly and he is riding upon a colt the young foal of an ass. This takes us directly to the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem on what we call Palm Sunday. Then the Lord carries on describing these obscure events. What we see from all this is that Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem has a context. And the context is the struggle and move and counter move of Israel’s enemies. Christ comes to Israel not only as their Messiah but their deliverer. He says the LORD their God shall save them in that day like a shepherd rescuing his flock. They will be like the gems of a crown, which is lifted up as a sign to the land. Is it possible to measure his grace and how beautiful he is? What he provides will be like bread to the young men and the joy of wine to the young women. When Israel needs rain in the autumn they will call on the Lord and they will be heard. The Lord will save his people. He will bring them to the place of blessing and he will have mercy on them. The Lord will whistle for his sheep to return to his pasture and they will flock to him. Those that have died will rise and they will be brought back to Zion. The Lord will destroy those who oppressed Israel. The Lord will have two shepherds crooks, one called ‘beauty’ and the other ‘bands’. Then the rod ‘beauty’ will be broken in two. Perhaps Zechariah is describing the two forms of religious leadership in Israel. Sadducees and Pharisees - beauty and bands. Perhaps he is saying that the theology of the Sadducees will be broken - perhaps by the resurrection of Christ! Next we have an interesting prophecy. It seems that Christ is asking the religious leaders for the price of his own head. So they weighed for my price – 30 silver coins. I dead slave was 60 silver coins. Christ was valued as half the price of a dead slave! Next we have a remarkable detail. The money is cast back into the temple and the money is taken to purchase the potters field. These remarkable prophesies are incidental proofs of the accuracy of the scriptures and of the prophets Zechariahs words. It seems that this whole passage is about Who is to be the shepherd of Israel? Is it to be Caiaphas the Sadducee? And the answer is No! When Christ stood before Caiaphas the high priest, He asked him, who are you? etc etc, At the end of the engagement Caiaphas tore his high priestly garments and thus brought his priesthood to an abrupt end. Then Zechariah speaks of the other staff – ‘bands’. This was also broken in two. Then the Lord says I will raise up a shepherd in the land, He will not care for the flock, he will not visit the sheep or tend them, He will eat the sheep and rip them open. The judgement of God is coming to the idolatrous shepherd. He will suffer injury on his right arm and he will loose sight on his right eye. All of this points to John chapter 10. Where Christ says I am the good shepherd etc etc. And Christ the Good shepherd is contrasted to the hireling and the wolf.

1: And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2: And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3: And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. 4: And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5: But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6: Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. 7: And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8: And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9: And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10: And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 11: And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12: And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13: And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14: And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15: And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

This little chapter of only 15 verses describes the whole era of the Millennium and period of 1000 years. The first thing that John describes is the binding of Satan and of his restriction in the Abyss. The next thing is that John sees thrones and to those who sit there is given authority to judge. He also sees again the souls of those who had been beheaded by the Antichrist live. They were raised from the dead and they reigned with Christ for a 1000 years. But the rest of the dead were not raised until the end of the 1000 years. So there will be two resurrections separated by the 1000 year Kingdom of Christ on earth. At the beginning, the resurrection of the righteous and at the end the unrighteous. At the end of the Millennium Satan is released again and he starts a rebellion again but Christ confronts him defeats him and sends him to the Lake of fire. Then we have the establishment of the Great White Throne. Here the wicked who are in hell are raised from the dead and stand before Christ in judgment. They are judged according to what they have done and the book of life is consulted. Those not recorded in the book of life are cast alive into the lake of fire. Death and hell are cast into the lake of fire too. And so we see that all who have ever lived will live forever, either in blessedness of Christ’s presence or in the lake of fire.

1: And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chisleu; 2: When they had sent unto the house of God Sherezer and Regem-melech, and their men, to pray before the LORD, 3: And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?

7v4-8v23 Threefold answer

4: Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me, saying, 5: Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? 6: And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves? 7: Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain? 8: And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying, 9: Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother: 10: And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. 11: But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. 12: Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. 13: Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts: 14: But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

Zechariah, 8

1: Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, 2: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury. 3: Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain. 4: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. 5: And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. 6: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts. 7: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; 8: And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness. 9: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Let your hands be strong, ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built. 10: For before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast; neither was there any peace to him that went out or came in because of the affliction: for I set all men every one against his neighbour. 11: But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days, saith the LORD of hosts. 12: For the seed shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. 13: And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong. 14: For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of hosts, and I repented not: 15: So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not. 16: These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates: 17: And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD. 18: And the word of the LORD of hosts came unto me, saying, 19: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace. 20: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: 21: And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also. 22: Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD. 23: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.


The next thing that Zechariah sees is a vision of four chariots. These chariots bear a remarkable resemblance to the Four horsemen of Revelation that John saw. Zechariah asks what they mean and he is told that they are four spirits of the heavens and they are sent out from the presence of the Lord. the black horses go north and the white follow them and the last horses go south. Then Zechariah is told that ‘The Branch’ will grow up and he will build the temple of the LORD. He will rule in the temple and he will be a priest on his throne. Next Zechariah finds that a question arises as to whether the children of Israel should celebrate the yearly fast. The answer from the Lord is when you fasted during the captivity did you fast to the Lord? and when you ate and drank did you do that to the Lord? Shouldn’t you come together to hear the word of God? Then the Lord gave instructions to Israel. He said, you judges give righteous judgments, show mercy and compassion to your brother, do not oppress the widow, the orphan or the poor. Do not think up evil against your brother. However the children of Israel turned away from the Lord and put their fingers in their ears and their hearts became like stone. Because of this rejection the Lord sent them judgment. Then the Lord spoke to Zechariah again. The Lord said I am coming back to Jerusalem to Zion. Jerusalem will be called the city of truth and the mountain of the LORD of hosts will be called the Holy Mountain. Old men and women will live in Jerusalem again and children will be heard in the streets playing. The Lord will save Jerusalem from all the neighbouring countries. There will be peace in the Middle east and there will be a great increase in agricultural production. All Israel will fear the Lord. They will speak truth and righteousness. The fasts of Israel will be turned into times of great joy. Many nations will go to Jerusalem to seek the Lord and to pray before the Lord. In those days ten men will take hold of the skirt of a Jew saying we go with you because we have heard that God is with you. Is there a future for Israel? Of course there is.

These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21: And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.


And so the Judgments of God move onward. And the voice of a great company of people in heaven say, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. The 24 elders and the four beast fall down and worship the Lamb. Its interesting that right through Revelation Christ is referred to as the Lamb. There is an interchange of praise and worship between the throne and heavens occupants. John sees a white horse upon it is seated he called faithful and true. Clearly this is Christ. He has many crowns His vesture is dipped in blood (Joseph) he is called the Word of God. He is followed by great armies on white horses. He rides forth to conquer the nations and to judge them. He has on his thigh - KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. An angel invites the carrion to come to feast on the kings of the earth. The beast and the false prophet are cast into the lake of fire. This is the judgment of the Antichrist.

1: And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, 2: And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: 3: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. 4: So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? 5: Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. 6: Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. 7: Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it. 8: Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 9: The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. 10: For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth. 11: Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? 12: And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? 13: And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. 14: Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the LORD of the whole earth.

Zechariah, 5

5v1-4 8. Flying roll

1: Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. 2: And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. 3: Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. 4: I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

5v5-11 9. Woman in Ephah

5: Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth. 6: And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth. 7: And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah. 8: And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof. 9: Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven. 10: Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah? 11: And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.


Zechariah records in our Daily Bible reading three more unusual visions. The first is of a candlestick made of gold with a bowl on top of it that has seven pipes leading to seven lamps. Standing next to it there are two olive trees, one on either side. The prophet asked the man what these things mean and he said don’t you know!. Then the answer he received was not by might or by power but by my spirit says the Lord. Oil in scripture signifies the Holy Spirit and the angel of the Lord seems to be indicating that the light and the service of Israel will be not by human might or strength but by the empowering of the Holy Spirit. Then he says Who are you O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain. The head stone of the mountain will be brought forth with shouts of joy and they will cry Grace, grace. It will be by Gods grace that he will enable Israel. Then the Lord revealed to Zechariah that Zerubbabel will begin the house of the Lord and he will finish it. All men will know that the Lord has done it all. And who are those who despise the day of small things? The Messianic kingdom may have a small beginning but like a grain of mustard seed it will have a great end. Zechariah asks what the two olive trees mean and he is told that they represent the two anointed ones who stand by the LORD of the whole earth. In the next vision he sees a scroll that flies. It’s about 30 feet long and about 15 feet wide. The Lord explains that the scroll is the curse of God that goes out on the face of all the earth. It will be the means of the judgment of men. Next Zechariah sees another vision. Some of these visions are very unusual indeed. This time he sees what can only be understood to be a large bowl that stores an ephah of volume. The weight of it seemed to be the weight of a talent of lead. A woman seems to be sitting in the bowl. The weight of lead is thrown against the pouring place of the bowl and there seemed to come out two women! Both women had wings like a stork and the carried the bowl to Babylon so that it might become a house. I have not heard any explanation for these things. Maybe these are the things that will be closed up until the end times.

A very bright angel comes out of heaven to announce that Babylon has fallen. Babylon has become the cage of demons for ever and ever. The call to come out of her and be separate is to the inhabitants of the earth in relation to the wickedness of Babylon. The city will fall in one day in fact in one hour. This will be a worldwide economic collapse in which every country’s economy will fail totally because they are linked to Babylon. It seems much of her wealth will be by shipping. The city will be deserted forever.

A Apocalyptic Visions

1v1-6 Introduction

1: In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, 2: The LORD hath been sore displeased with your fathers. 3: Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. 4: Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD. 5: Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever? 6: But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

1v7-17 1. Riders under the Myrtle trees

7: Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, 8: I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white. 9: Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be. 10: And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth. 11: And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest. 12: Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years? 13: And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words. 14: So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. 15: And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction. 16: Therefore thus saith the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem. 17: Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the LORD shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.

1v18,19 2. Four Horns

18: Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns. 19: And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.

1v20-21 3. Four Smiths

20: And the LORD shewed me four carpenters. 21: Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.

Zechariah, 2

2v1-13 4. Man with the measuring line

1: I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand. 2: Then said I, Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof. 3: And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him, 4: And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein: 5: For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her. 6: Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the LORD: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the LORD. 7: Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon. 8: For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. 9: For, behold, I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me. 10: Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. 11: And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee. 12: And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again. 13: Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

Zechariah, 3

3v1-7 5. Joshua and Satan

1: And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. 2: And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? 3: Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. 4: And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. 5: And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by. 6: And the angel of the LORD protested unto Joshua, saying, 7: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.

3v8-10 6. The Branch

8: Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH. 9: For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. 10: In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.


In the Prophecy of Zechariah he records the message of the lord to Judah and its message is substantially the same as the message of Haggai. The message of the LORD is - Finish the temple. In this book of 14 chapters Zechariah writes to give hope to Israel regarding the coming of the Messiah. Chapters 1-8 written about 520 BC. Chapters 9–14 about 480 BC. In the first six verses we see Zechariah receiving visions from the Lord at about the same time as Haggai. He says the LORD has not been pleased with your fathers. But he says forget the past and turn unto me and l will turn unto you. This message is in exactly the same track as the Message of John the Baptist, Christ and His Apostles 400 years later when they also call on Judah to turn to the Lord God of their fathers. They are to repent and return to their God because the Kingdom of God is very near. Zephaniah says all through Jewish history the LORD has called on Israel to turn from the evil ways yet they never did. This is the theological background to the OT and the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. God calls on Israel to return to their God. Then in Chapter 1 Zephaniah begins a series of ten visions. The first of eiders under the Myrtle trees. He sees a rider on a red hors and other riders on red horses. And he asks what these mean? The answer he receives is that Jerusalem is down trodden and the Gentile nations are living in ease. Therefore the Lord God will return to Jerusalem and the temple is t be rebuilt. The Lord will bless Jerusalem. Then Zephaniah sees four horns. He again asks what they mean? And he is told that these represent the fours kingdoms that have scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem. Next he sees four smiths or carpenters. After enquiry he is told that these four workers represent the four kingdoms. Next he sees a man with a measuring line. He is a surveyor. Zephaniah asks him what he is doing and he is told that he is going to measure the city of Jerusalem. He is not measuring the existing city but he is measuring the footprint of the City of Zion. It is noticeable that there will be no walls there because the Lord will protect them and the Glory of the Lord will be in the middle of the city. The nations that have spoiled Israel will be judged by God because the one that touches Israel touches the apple of the Lords eye. The Lord will deal with Israel’s enemies. And the Lord encourages Israel to sing and rejoice because the Lord will come a dwell in the middle of Zion. In those days many nations will be converted to the Lord. All human beings are to be silent before the Lord because he will raise up Israel. The next vision is Joshua the high priest who is standing in front of the angel of the LORD and Satan is also present trying to resist him. Then the LORD spoke to Satan saying The LORD rebuke you Satan because l have chosen Jerusalem. Isn’t Jerusalem like a brand plucked from the burning? Joshua was clothed in filthy garments before the angel and the angel demands that he is clothed in holy garments. The Lord promises blessings and responsibilities to Joshua if he will keep the whole law. Lastly Joshua is promised that the Lord will bring forth ‘The Branch’ Because the Lord laid a stone in front of Joshua that had seven eyes and it is engraved on by the Lord himself. Then the Lord will heal the sin of the land of Israel and in that day every man will dwell under his own vine and fig tree. They will have joy and satisfaction in the Lord.

1: And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: 2: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. 3: So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4: And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6: And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. 7: And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. 8: The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 9: And here is the mind which hath wisdom. John is invited to come and see the judgment of the Great Whore. All of the Kings of the earth have committed fornication with her and the inhabitants of the earth have become drunk with the wine of her fornication. She is seated on a scarlet coloured beast; she is full of the names of Blaspheme. She is arrayed in purple and scarlet. She is decked with gold and precious stones and pearls. She has a golden cup which id full of abominations and filth. On her head is written MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. John is amazed and the angel asks him why he is amazed then he proceeds to explain what she is really like. The angel shows John a series of kings ten in all that will male war with the Lamb. The Whore sits on the nations of the world. The woman is the great city which is the centre of world power. Some say this is Rome others Babylon. I believe it is Babylon.

1v1-11 A Challenge to the people

1: In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying, 2: Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD's house should be built. 3: Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying, 4: Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? 5: Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. 6: Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. 7: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. 8: Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD. 9: Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. 2v1-9 The Discouragement of the people & the Encouragement of the Lord

1: In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying, 2: Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying, 3: Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing? 4: Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts: 5: According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. 6: For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; 7: And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts. 8: The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts. 9: The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

2v10-19 An appeal to the Law

10: In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying, 11: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying, 12: If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No. 13: Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean. 14: Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean. 15: And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD: 16: Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty. 17: I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD. 18: Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid, consider it. 19: Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.

2v20-23 A Revelation of the future

20: And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying, 21: Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth; 22: And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother. 23: In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.


Haggai writes his prophesy to tell the people to put God first and build the Temple of the Lord. His little book has only 2 chapters and it is written by Haggai the first of the prophets after the captivity. 520 BC. He knew the prophets Zechariah and Malachi. The people were living in luxurious houses while the Temple in Jerusalem was unfinished. Haggai calls the people to put God first and finish the job of the rebuilding of the Temple. Haggai refers to the ‘Word of the Lord’ as his authority. The Letter of James, like the Book of Haggai, has the same practical attitude to faith in God. Haggai has the restoration of the religion of the people as his priority but it is to be fulfilled in the practical work of building, he has his one on the Lord of heaven both he has both feet on the ground. (The Calendar: the book encompasses a time of three months and fourteen days. There are five messages each given on a specific date.) As we have seen the other Prophets record the time of their prophecies but Haggai records the actual date. This is more like a journal of the Prophets ministry. The first date is what we call 1st September and closes on what we call Christmas eve. On September 1st 520 BC it was the second year of the reign of Darius. It was the sixth month and the first day of the month. On this day the Word of the Lord came to Haggai. In Chapter one he brings a challenge to Gods people. The Lord says you have begun well but you are not getting on very well. You eat but you are not full. You drink but you do not have the joy of the Lord. You earn wages to put them in bags full of holes. And why? Because you are not putting first things first! Christ would say Seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you! The Lord has called a halt to their blessings because god is not first in their lives. Then on September 24th 520 BC the people respond to the challenge. Zerubbabel rises to the challenge and he obeys the voice of the LORD their God and fear him. Then the LORD encourages them saying I Am with you – says the LORD. then the LORD stirred up the spirits of the king and of the people to do the work of the LORD. In chapter two Haggai records that on October 21st 520 BC the word of the LORD came again to Israel and it’s a word of encouragement for a people that are discouraged. He says none of you ever saw the Old Temple but be strong and work because l am going to be with you. And the Lord says one day l will shake the whole earth and l will bring forth the Messiah (The desire of all nations) And l will fill this house with glory. The glory of this temple will be greater than the former temple. And the Lord will bring peace in the whole earth. We see how seemly the prophets sees his day but speaks over the centuries to describe a future kingdom when all men of every nation will fear the Lord. Lastly he has a vision from the Lord on the December 24th 520 BC (Christmas Eve) now that the temple is well on its way to be completed Haggai is told to ask the priests regarding the holiness of the service of the sanctuary. He reminds the people that the service of the Lord must be carried out in a state of cleanness before the Lord. Then the Lord spoke again saying one day in the distant future when l destroy the nations that rebel against me l will raise up Zerubbabel as the authority in which all men will serve the Lord. We learn from prophecy of Haggai the importance of putting God first in all our lives.
