The Nazarite
1: And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2: Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD: 3: He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried. 4: All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk. 5: All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no rasor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow. 6: All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body. 7: He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head. 8: All the days of his separation he is holy unto the LORD. 9: And if any man die very suddenly by him, and he hath defiled the head of his consecration; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it. 10: And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: 11: And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and make an atonement for him, for that he sinned by the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day. 12: And he shall consecrate unto the LORD the days of his separation, and shall bring a lamb of the first year for a trespass offering: but the days that were before shall be lost, because his separation was defiled. 13: And this is the law of the Nazarite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled: he shall be brought unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: 14: And he shall offer his offering unto the LORD, one he lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin offering, and one ram without blemish for peace offerings, 15: And a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and wafers of unleavened bread anointed with oil, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings. 16: And the priest shall bring them before the LORD, and shall offer his sin offering, and his burnt offering: 17: And he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD, with the basket of unleavened bread: the priest shall offer also his meat offering, and his drink offering. 18: And the Nazarite shall shave the head of his separation at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it in the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offerings. 19: And the priest shall take the sodden shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazarite, after the hair of his separation is shaven: 20: And the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the LORD: this is holy for the priest, with the wave breast and heave shoulder: and after that the Nazarite may drink wine. 21: This is the law of the Nazarite who hath vowed, and of his offering unto the LORD for his separation, beside that that his hand shall get: according to the vow which he vowed, so he must do after the law of his separation.
The Priests blessing
22: And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23: Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, 24: The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: 25: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: 26: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. 27: And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

Numbers, 8
The Lighting of the Lamps
1: And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2: Speak unto Aaron, and say unto him, When thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light over against the candlestick. 3: And Aaron did so; he lighted the lamps thereof over against the candlestick, as the LORD commanded Moses. 4: And this work of the candlestick was of beaten gold, unto the shaft thereof, unto the flowers thereof, was beaten work: according unto the pattern which the LORD had shewed Moses, so he made the candlestick.
The Levites purified
5: And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 6: Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them. 7: And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean. 8: Then let them take a young bullock with his meat offering, even fine flour mingled with oil, and another young bullock shalt thou take for a sin offering. 9: And thou shalt bring the Levites before the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt gather the whole assembly of the children of Israel together: 10: And thou shalt bring the Levites before the LORD: and the children of Israel shall put their hands upon the Levites: 11: And Aaron shall offer the Levites before the LORD for an offering of the children of Israel, that they may execute the service of the LORD. 12: And the Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks: and thou shalt offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, unto the LORD, to make an atonement for the Levites. 13: And thou shalt set the Levites before Aaron, and before his sons, and offer them for an offering unto the LORD. 14: Thus shalt thou separate the Levites from among the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be mine. 15: And after that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt cleanse them, and offer them for an offering. 16: For they are wholly given unto me from among the children of Israel; instead of such as open every womb, even instead of the firstborn of all the children of Israel, have I taken them unto me. 17: For all the firstborn of the children of Israel are mine, both man and beast: on the day that I smote every firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for myself. 18: And I have taken the Levites for all the firstborn of the children of Israel. 19: And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tabernacle of the congregation, and to make an atonement for the children of Israel: that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come nigh unto the sanctuary. 20: And Moses, and Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Israel, did to the Levites according unto all that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so did the children of Israel unto them. 21: And the Levites were purified, and they washed their clothes; and Aaron offered them as an offering before the LORD; and Aaron made an atonement for them to cleanse them. 22: And after that went the Levites in to do their service in the tabernacle of the congregation before Aaron, and before his sons: as the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so did they unto them. 23: And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 24: This is it that belongeth unto the Levites: from twenty and five years old and upward they shall go in to wait upon the service of the tabernacle of the congregation: 25: And from the age of fifty years they shall cease waiting upon the service thereof, and shall serve no more: 26: But shall minister with their brethren in the tabernacle of the congregation, to keep the charge, and shall do no service. Thus shalt thou do unto the Levites touching their charge.
In the next three chapters we have a number of interesting passages. First we have the case of a Nazarite vow. Second we have the blessing of the priests and the dedication of the Tabernacle. This includes the lighting of the lamps and finally the Levites are purified for the service of the Lord. First we find that the Lord makes a special provision for the dedication of men who have upon them the Nazarite Vow. This can be on both men or women and it involves a number of specific rituals and practises that were quite unique. The first thing is that the person is separated unto the Lord or dedicated to the Lord for his use and service. It was a voluntary dedication of complete abstinence to alcohol and even from grapes fresh or dried. During the time of his dedication he or she is not to cut their hair. During this time of the vow the person must not come near a dead body. He must not touch a dead body even if his family die. If however he finds that he has inadvertently touched a dead body then he is to shave his head. (The shaving of the head was forbidden in the Law normally) And then after eight day he is to offer a sin offering and a burnt offering. Later when the time of the vow is completed he is to bring a lamb, a ewe, a ram and a meal offering and the priest is to offer this because his holiness was defiled. The hair that is shaved off is to be burnt on the fire. We see these things worked out in the Life of Samson the judge of Israel who are a Nazarite from birth all his life. And we also see that Paul shaved his head because he had had a vow. Next the Lord describes the blessing that Aaron was the state over Israel.
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
When the Tabernacle was completed the Lord told Moses to dedicate the whole thing to the LORD. the heads of the tribes came one by one and gave the animals for offerings and the money that was collected according to the number of the tribes. It took many days for all the offerings to be made and when everything was finished Moses went into the Tabernacle and the LORD spoke to him from the Mercy seat. Next the Lord told Moses to tell Aaron to light the seven lamps. Next the Lord turned his attention to the tribe of the Levites. Their special responsibility was to minister in the Tabernacle. The Levites were washed, shaved all over and offerings were offered for their cleansing. The Levites were taken by the Lord instead of the first born who were redeemed from Egypt. All men from 30 – 50 were eligible to serve the Lord. those over 50 were not required to serve but they took a responsibility to see that things were done correctly in the Tabernacle.
