If we read Hebrews 11 we find that the characters mentioned had faith and their faith led to obedience to the will of God. Of course they were not saved by their obedience but they were either righteous or unruighteous.

[2] For by it the elders obtained a good report.
[4] By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
[5] By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
[13] These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
[39] And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
All these men were declared righteous by God on the ground of the obedience to the Will of God. Those who lived under law were righteous if they kept it. 2Kings 14v3 15v3 34 18v3 22v2 2Chron 25v2 26v4 27v2 29v2 34v2 Those who were disobedient were declared evil in the sight of the Lord 2 Kings 13v2 v11 14v24 15v9, v18, 24, 28, 17v2 21v2, 20, 23v32, 37, 24v9, 19, 2Chron 33v22 36v5, 9, 12, Jer 52v2.
There were three schools of thought in Israel.
The Cabbalists thought that it was not so much the keeping of the law but the whole journey of a mans life that God declared eitheir righteous or unrighteous.
The Pharisees believed that it was the simple keeping of the law that made a man righteous. (This was Pauls theology before he was saved)
The Liberals believed that it was not just the law but the whole man that was declared righteous. Of course no man knew whether he was righteous in his lifelime.
When the OT men died they went to Abrahams bosom or to hell. Luke 15.
When Christ died he led Captivity captive and released all the righteous to enter glory based on the covenant which he accomplished at the Cross.

Question - Are the OT Saints saved? And if so are they saved by Grace through Faith like us today?
Let think about a number of questions...(Go through them slowly thinking about each one).
Where the OT saints saved because they were children of Israel?
Or where they saved because they were redeemed from Egypt?
Where they saved because they were in Covenant with the Lord and under law?
Where they saved because they were circumcised?
Where they saved by their obedience to the law?
Where they saved from their enemies by the Judges and the Kings of Israel?
Where they saved by baptism unto repentance that John, Christ, the Apostle preached?
Or where they saved by becoming disciples of Christ?
Maybe they were saved by becoming apostles of Christ!
As you can see this is a much more complex question that it appears at first.
One of the oldest books of the Bible - the book of Job says this…
Job 19v25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: 26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Job had come to understand three important truths,
One, that His redeemer (Christ) will stand in resurrection at the latter day upon the earth.
Secondly, he says that though he will die and worms will eat his flesh yet – in his flesh – he will see God. In other words he is saying that l will be raised from the dead
Thirdly at that time l will see God (Christ). This l believe is the key to understanding this question.

Jer 31v31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Clearly all the righteous (both mortal an immortal of that day who meet Christ will be born again.
Rom 11v25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. 26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: 27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
So the ‘born again’ salvation experience of Israel is future and bound up with the personal appearance of Christ in which he takes away their sins forever and gives them a new heart.
the really amazing thing is that at this time, while Israel is in a state of LoAmmi God is his wisdom has declared that men do not stand before him on the basis of personal obedience to the law but rather they forsake all law keeping in order to come down from the hights of priveldge in order that God can deal with them in the gutter on the ground of faith.
Paul put it like this...
Phil 3v4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: 5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
Paul did not dispise his Jewish breeding or heritage but in the present time these things disqualify him from Grace - So he places all the jewish stuff on the dunghill and takes his place with a gentile heathen that God might deal with him by Grace.
These are my thoughts up to this present time and l am sure that there is more for the Lord to reveal. i would appreciate your constructive comments.

My thoughts regarding Israel
Israel
1. Israel was a redeemed nation. They were not redeemed before God as individuals but as a nation.
Deu 7v8 But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
2. The whole nation was in a covenant relationship with God.
3. The covenant was the same for the righteous and the unrighteous.
4. The covenant was a covenant of Law keeping - all 613 of them.
5. God promised rain, fruitfulness in the land, security, peace, freedom from evil beasts, freedom from invading armies, victory in war, the presence of God, the blessing of God and long life if Israel obeyed the law. But God warned them with curses, sickness, poverty, barrenness, oppression and a short life if they disobeyed the Law.
Lev 26v1 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God. 2 Ye shall keep my Sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD. 3 If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; 4 Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. 6 And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. 7 And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. 8 And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. 9 For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you. 10 And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new. 11 And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. 13 I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright. 14 But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments;

6. The Prophets that were sent to Israel came with the message to repent.
Lev 26v14 But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; 15 And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:
Matt.3v2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
7. The covenant with Israel was with Israel only.
Lev 37v34 These are the commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses for
the children of Israel in mount Sinai.
8. The obligation under law was primarily obedience not faith.
Exod.19v5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
9. The promise of the kingdom blessing was promised to the righteous.
To enter the Kingdom God promised the resurrection of the righteous.
Matt.25v34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
10. Those who believed the word of the Lord were recognised for their obedience, but their faith did not bring the imputed righteousness of Christ.
11. Abraham was never an Israelite. There is a sense in which the covenant that Israel had was based on the promises given to Abraham which were by Grace through Faith.
12. Israel knew the mercy of God in the withholding of judgment but not the grace of God as we know of it today. There can be no grace where there is law.
13. Israel were not ‘Saved’ as men are today in the Church.
14. Those who heard the word of the Lord and believed it – obeyed his commands God called them - the righteous. Their characteristic experience is the fear of the Lord which leads them to a change of mind and a righteous life. They live in the expectation of a resurrection of the righteous.
Prov 3v7, Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
Ecc 12v13, Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
15. God will raise righteous Israel from the dead prior to the second coming of Christ . They will see Christ and mourn and believe in him and be born again. Then they will then enter the Kingdom.

Exod.19v5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
9. The promise of the kingdom blessing was promised to the righteous.
To enter the Kingdom God promised the resurrection of the righteous.
Matt.25v34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
10. Those who believed the word of the Lord were recognised for their obedience, but their faith did not bring the imputed righteousness of Christ.
11. Abraham was never an Israelite. There is a sense in which the covenant that Israel had was based on the promises given to Abraham which were by Grace through Faith.
12. Israel knew the mercy of God in the withholding of judgment but not the grace of God as we know of it today. There can be no grace where there is law.
13. Israel were not ‘Saved’ as men are today in the Church.
14. Those who heard the word of the Lord and believed it – obeyed his commands God called them - the righteous. Their characteristic experience is the fear of the Lord which leads them to a change of mind and a righteous life. They live in the expectation of a resurrection of the righteous.
Prov 3v7, Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
Ecc 12v13, Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
15. God will raise righteous Israel from the dead prior to the second coming of Christ . They will see Christ and mourn and believe in him and be born again. Then they will then enter the Kingdom.

16. The OT saints knew of the Grace of God that would come on Gentiles and looked into when and how these times would come, but they never experienced it for themselves.

(In each of these lists l have tried to restrict the texts to those that refer to the preaching of Salvation to the unsaved or to references to those in a saved state as a result of Repentance, faith belief or conversion).
Texts regarding ‘Repent or Repentance’.
In this list l divide the texts into different groups.
These texts were preached to only to Israel by John, Christ and the Apostles before his death (which properly is the Gospel of the Kingdom.)

It seems that faith is not found in the all Gospels in the sense of being saved, however it is used in the sense of believing that Christ can perform miracles
1. 27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.

It seems that an interesting thing comes out in this analysis. Prior to Christ’s rejection by the religious leaders of Israel Christ addressed Israel in the terms of repentance and not even mentioning faith. However after his rejection Christ changes his message of Repentance to Israel to personal faith in him to perform Miracles. In Johns Gospel it appears that very early in his Gospel he describes the rejection by the Religious leaders. Christ tells Nicodemus in Ch 3 that,
John 3v9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
From this point on the Synoptic Gospels show that Christ heals only in response to personal faith and he preaches only in Parable so that those unbelievers who hear might not believe. John in his Gospel emphasises the later part of Christ’s ministry which is characterised by his message of personal faith in him.

In the NT the subject chiefly has reference to "repentance" from sin, and this change of mind involves both a turning from sin and a turning to God. The parable of the Prodigal Son is an outstanding illustration of this. Christ began His ministry with a call to "repentance," Matt. 4:17, but the call is addressed, not as in the OT to the nation, but to the individual. In the Gospel of John, as distinct from the Synoptic Gospels, referred to above, "repentance" is not mentioned, even in connection with John the Baptist's preaching; in John's Gospel and 1st Epistle the effects are stressed, e.g., in the new birth, and, generally, in the active turning from sin to God by the exercise of faith (John 3:3; 9:38; 1 John 1:9), as in the NT in general.

The main elements in "faith" in its relation to the invisible God, as distinct from "faith" in man, are especially brought out in the use of this noun and the corresponding verb, pisteuo; they are (1) a firm conviction, producing a full acknowledgement of God's revelation or truth, e.g., 2 Thess. 2:11,12; (2) a personal surrender to Him, John 1:12; (3) a conduct inspired by such surrender, 2 Cor. 5:7. In summary
Repentance is to have an afterthought instead of a forethought. It is a change of mind. A change of action might follow but the emphasis is on a change of mind.
Faith is to rely or lean upon something. In this case to rely upon the word of Christ for salvation.
Believe is to accept the word of another. To believe a report and to depend wholly upon it.
Conversion is to a turn around a complete change of direction or life.

C. What do the scriptures say is the message that we preach?
The Message today is faith in Christ for salvation. The scripture is our example and the frequency of the words gives us a clear emphasis.
D. Why did Christ preach Repentance to Israel?
Christ preached repentance to Israel (prior to his rejection) because he was calling them to have second thoughts about how they were thinking. He was calling them to return to their covenant obligations.
E. What is the true basis of salvation today?
The basis of salvation today is faith alone in Christ’s atoning sacrifice. It is not based on a change of mind or behaviour. However this does not mean that after believing in the Lord the believer does not have a change of life and behaviour? Obviously not. Those who come to Christ do turn from sin and lead a new life. However it is not a change of life – properly called conversion – that saves.
i. Do we preach Repentance?
The emphasis of the Gospel of the Grace of God is not repentance but faith. We cannot call men to return to God as John the Baptist, Christ, the Apostles and the seventy did. Israel today are in a state of rejection of Christ and Gentile men today are not in able to return to a covenant of which they are strangers.
Eph.2v12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
The Message of God today in the age of Grace is Faith in Christ and justification by Faith.
ii. Do we preach Faith in Christ alone?
Yes this is the heart and soul of the Christian message. John 3v16 is sufficient to prove this to be true.
iii. Do we preach conversion?
As can seen the concept of conversion is not emphasised a great deal in scripture and conversion means a change of life and direction. This is exactly what happens when God the Holy Spirit changes a man. However a change of direction and life occurs after faith and it is the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. So conversion is not primarily the focus of the Gospel message itself.
Question 1 Some might say, Isn’t this ‘easy believeism’?
This phrase ‘easy believeism’ is a derogatory term to describe the idea that people just believe in Christ in the sense of a casual acknowledgment of Christ’s death. This is not of course true. The bible teaches that the person who is saved is one who casts himself wholly on Christ resting totally upon him for salvation. This is what faith or believing is and it is hardly ‘an easy thing’. It is a total abandonment of ones self and a total faith in the promise of Christ and His work of atoning Grace.
Question 2 Some might say, is this the historic truth of Christianity?
Yes it is, the reformers stated it well in their slogan, ‘Sola Fide’ – Only Faith. They had come to know through controversy and battle that there is only one condition of salvation and that was Faith in Christ alone.

They preached the truth of Gods Word - Justification by faith. There is nothing to add to faith and they dare not take anything from it.
When George Whitfield and John Wesley set out to preach the Gospel from city to city and village to village they took one message. Justification by faith and they turned the hearts of men in their thousands to the Lord on the basis of this glorious Gospel.
Question 3 Did the Apostles preach Justification by Faith?
They did – Here are a few clear quotations…
Acts.13v39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Rom 3v28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Rom.5v1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Gal.2v16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Gal.3v11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
v24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Question 4 Isn’t repentance a change of behaviour?
In Evangelical circles there is a common misunderstanding as to the true meaning of the word repentance. They believe that the word repentance means a change of mind and a reformation of life - a change of behaviour. It is true that after salvation there will be a change of behaviour but this is not what the word repentance means.
Question 5 Isn’t John the Baptists and Christ’s call to repentance the same message that we preach today?
Acts.19 1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
These men were Disciples of John. They had repented and been baptised just the same as those who heard Christ and his apostles. However they had never come by faith to Christ. Nor had they heard of the cross and resurrection. When they did hear the Gospel they believed and were baptised.
The Message of John was baptism leading to repentance
The message of Paul was faith leading to salvation and Christian baptism.
The message of John Christ and the Apostles was only preached to Israel but the Gospel of the Grace of God was to Jews and Gentiles.
Question 6 Did Christ preach faith?
No. In Christ’s public ministry he did not preach faith in him. He preached the glad tidings of the coming kingdom. However when Israel rejected his message he refused to preach any more and he changed his message dramatically and he then spoke of faith to men and women on a personal basis. Those who believed in him personally were born again.
Question 7 Was the Gospel of the Grace of God preached by John, Christ and his Apostles?
No The message of John and Christ was not based on the cross and resurrection nor was the emphasis faith.
Question 8 Isn’t faith inferred when Christ preached repentance?
No Faith and repentance are fundamentally different things altogether. They are different words and different concepts. The words repentance and faith are mentioned together occasionally – the writers would not use two different words which mean the same thing in the same sentence.
Question 9 What is the Gospel of the kingdom?
The Gospel of the kingdom is the good news that the kingdom of heaven is coming (The messianic kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ)
The Gospel of the kingdom is the news that the Prophetic scriptures are about to be fulfilled.
The Gospel of the kingdom was addressed only to Israel.
The Gospel of the Kingdom was a call to Israel to think again about how they stand before the Lord God of Israel and it has a legal tone.
The Gospel of the kingdom is addressed to a nation under law.
The Gospel of the kingdom is a call to Israel to return to their obligation under the Mosaic law.
Question 10 If l preached the Gospel from John’s Gospel and Romans then l would not be preaching the subject of repentance?
That’s true the concept of repentance is not specifically mentioned in John or Romans.
Johns Gospel was specifically written to bring men to salvation.
John 20v31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Romans was written to outline Pauls gospel for the church at Rome..

(In each of these lists l have tried to restrict the texts to those that refer to the preaching of Salvation to the unsaved or to references to those in a saved state as a result of Repentance, faith belief or conversion).
Texts regarding ‘Repent or Repentance’.
In this list l divide the texts into different groups.
These texts were preached to only to Israel by John, Christ and the Apostles before his death (which properly is the Gospel of the Kingdom.)

The texts regarding faith, (again these texts are restricted to the context of preaching of the Gospel or in reference to those who have responded to it)
It seems that faith is not found in the all Gospels in the sense of being saved, however it is used in the sense of believing that Christ can perform miracles
1. 27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
2. Acts.15v9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
3. Acts.20v21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

It seems that an interesting thing comes out in this analysis. Prior to Christ’s rejection by the religious leaders of Israel Christ addressed Israel in the terms of repentance and not even mentioning faith. However after his rejection Christ changes his message of Repentance to Israel to personal faith in him to perform Miracles. In Johns Gospel it appears that very early in his Gospel he describes the rejection by the Religious leaders. Christ tells Nicodemus in Ch 3 that,
John 3v9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
From this point on the Synoptic Gospels show that Christ heals only in response to personal faith and he preaches only in Parable so that those unbelievers who hear might not believe. John in his Gospel emphasises the later part of Christ’s ministry which is characterised by his message of personal faith in him.

In summary
Repentance is to have an afterthought instead of a forethought. It is a change of mind. A change of action might follow but the emphasis is on a change of mind.
Faith is to rely or lean upon something. In this case to rely upon the word of Christ for salvation.
Believe is to accept the word of another. To believe a report and to depend wholly upon it.
Conversion is to a turn around a complete change of direction or life.

C. What do the scriptures say is the message that we preach?
The Message today is faith in Christ for salvation. The scripture is our example and the frequency of the words gives us a clear emphasis.
D. Why did Christ preach Repentance to Israel?
Christ preached repentance to Israel (prior to his rejection) because he was calling them to have second thoughts about how they were thinking. He was calling them to return to their covenant obligations.
E. What is the true basis of salvation today?
The basis of salvation today is faith alone in Christ’s atoning sacrifice. It is not based on a change of mind or behaviour. However this does not mean that after believing in the Lord the believer does not have a change of life and behaviour? Obviously not. Those who come to Christ do turn from sin and lead a new life. However it is not a change of life – properly called conversion – that saves.
i. Do we preach Repentance?
The emphasis of the Gospel of the Grace of God is not repentance but faith. We cannot call men to return to God as John the Baptist, Christ, the Apostles and the seventy did. Israel today are in a state of rejection of Christ and Gentile men today are not in able to return to a covenant of which they are strangers.
Eph.2v12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
The Message of God today in the age of Grace is Faith in Christ and justification by Faith.
ii. Do we preach Faith in Christ alone?
Yes this is the heart and soul of the Christian message. John 3v16 is sufficient to prove this to be true.
iii. Do we preach conversion?
As can seen the concept of conversion is not emphasised a great deal in scripture and conversion means a change of life and direction. This is exactly what happens when God the Holy Spirit changes a man. However a change of direction and life occurs after faith and it is the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. So conversion is not primarily the focus of the Gospel message itself.
Question 1 Some might say, Isn’t this ‘easy believeism’?
This phrase ‘easy believeism’ is a derogatory term to describe the idea that people just believe in Christ in the sense of a casual acknowledgment of Christ’s death. This is not of course true. The bible teaches that the person who is saved is one who casts himself wholly on Christ resting totally upon him for salvation. This is what faith or believing is and it is hardly ‘an easy thing’. It is a total abandonment of ones self and a total faith in the promise of Christ and His work of atoning Grace.
Question 2 Some might say, is this the historic truth of Christianity?
Yes it is, the reformers stated it well in their slogan, ‘Sola Fide’ – Only Faith. They had come to know through controversy and battle that there is only one condition of salvation and that was Faith in Christ alone.

They preached the truth of Gods Word - Justification by faith. There is nothing to add to faith and they dare not take anything from it.
When George Whitfield and John Wesley set out to preach the Gospel from city to city and village to village they took one message. Justification by faith and they turned the hearts of men in their thousands to the Lord on the basis of this glorious Gospel.
Question 3 Did the Apostles preach Justification by Faith?
They did – Here are a few clear quotations…
Acts.13v39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Rom 3v28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Rom.5v1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Gal.2v16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Gal.3v11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
v24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Question 4 Isn’t repentance a change of behaviour?
In Evangelical circles there is a common misunderstanding as to the true meaning of the word repentance. They believe that the word repentance means a change of mind and a reformation of life - a change of behaviour. It is true that after salvation there will be a change of behaviour but this is not what the word repentance means.
Question 5 Isn’t John the Baptists and Christ’s call to repentance the same message that we preach today?
Acts.19 1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
These men were Disciples of John. They had repented and been baptised just the same as those who heard Christ and his apostles. However they had never come by faith to Christ. Nor had they heard of the cross and resurrection. When they did hear the Gospel they believed and were baptised.
The Message of John was baptism leading to repentance
The message of Paul was faith leading to salvation and Christian baptism.
The message of John Christ and the Apostles was only preached to Israel but the Gospel of the Grace of God was to Jews and Gentiles.
Question 6 Did Christ preach faith?
No. In Christ’s public ministry he did not preach faith in him. He preached the glad tidings of the coming kingdom. However when Israel rejected his message he refused to preach any more and he changed his message dramatically and he then spoke of faith to men and women on a personal basis. Those who believed in him personally were born again.
Question 7 Was the Gospel of the Grace of God preached by John, Christ and his Apostles?
No The message of John and Christ was not based on the cross and resurrection nor was the emphasis faith.
Question 8 Isn’t faith inferred when Christ preached repentance?
No Faith and repentance are fundamentally different things altogether. They are different words and different concepts. The words repentance and faith are mentioned together occasionally – the writers would not use two different words which mean the same thing in the same sentence.
Question 9 What is the Gospel of the kingdom?
The Gospel of the kingdom is the good news that the kingdom of heaven is coming (The messianic kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ)
The Gospel of the kingdom is the news that the Prophetic scriptures are about to be fulfilled.
The Gospel of the kingdom was addressed only to Israel.
The Gospel of the Kingdom was a call to Israel to think again about how they stand before the Lord God of Israel and it has a legal tone.
The Gospel of the kingdom is addressed to a nation under law.
The Gospel of the kingdom is a call to Israel to return to their obligation under the Mosaic law.
Question 10 If l preached the Gospel from John’s Gospel and Romans then l would not be preaching the subject of repentance?
That’s true the concept of repentance is not specifically mentioned in John or Romans.
Johns Gospel was specifically written to bring men to salvation.
John 20v31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Romans was written to outline Pauls gospel for the church at Rome..
Let us put our shoulder to the wheel, Let us put our hand to the plough, Let us preach Faith in Christ alone.
Luke 8v50 v50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
