July 15th Psalm 45
For the sons of Korah, Maschil. A song of loves.
1: My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. 2: Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever. 3: Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty. 4: And in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. 5: Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; whereby the people fall under thee. 6: Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. 7: Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 8: All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad. 9: Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. 10: Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house; 11: So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him. 12: And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat thy favour. 13: The king's daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold. 14: She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee. 15: With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king's palace. 16: Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children, whom thou mayest make princes in all the earth. 17: I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.
To the chief musician, For the sons of Korah. Upon Alamoth
1: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2: Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3: Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. 4: There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5: God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. 6: The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. 7: The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. 8: Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth. 9: He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. 10: Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. 11: The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
To the chief musician,
Today we are reading two more Psalms 45 & 46. Psalm 45 seems to be addressed to the Messiah - Christ. He says my mind is thinking about a wonderful thing and l am going to write about things concerning the King – Christ. He describes Christ as more beautiful than all young men. His words are beautiful and so the Lord has blessed him forever. Then he describes the reign of the king who is strong militarily and glorious in majesty. He calls on the King to prosper in truth, meekness and righteousness. He will fight striking fear in his enemies. His arrows are very short and they strike at the kings enemies. This Psalm is Messianic in the sense that it speaks of Messiahs Kingdom. And he says your throne O God is going to be eternal and it will be characterise by righteousness. The chief characteristic of the coming kingdom will be Law not Grace. Not the Mosaic Law but the Law of the New Covenant. The king he says – loves righteousness and hates iniquity (Iniquity is the breaking of law) And therefore the Lord has anointed him with the joy of his spirit empowerment. The king smells of Myrrh, Aloes and Cassia which have come as gifts from the ivory palaces (of the east). Then the Psalm speaks of things which only appear to be related to David or better Solomon. He says the Kings daughters were found among the honourable women of the kingdom. And the queen is dressed in gold from Ophir. Then he says to the Queen, listen to me, O daughter and think of this – forget about your own people and your father’s house. And if you do then the king will greatly desire after you and your beauty. Because he is your Lord and you are to bow before him as your king. Then the daughter of the king of Tyre will come with a gift and all the wealthy will seek your favours. The Kings daughter is full of glory in her house and her clothes are of gold. She will be brought in to meet the King in clothing of embroidery. (Some think that this refers to the Church or the redeemed Israel) and her attendants will accompany her. They will come with gladness and rejoicing and enter the kings palace. The fathers will be replaced by the Kings own children, princes over the earth. The name of the Lord will be never forgotten for ever and all nations will praise the Lord. In Psalm 46 the psalmist says God is the one to whom we can run too for protection and he strengthens us in times of trouble Therefore we are not afraid. Even if the earth moves and the mountains are thrown into the middle of the sea. Though the sea send Tsunamis’ big enough to make mountains afraid. Think of that. There is a river, whose streams will make the city of God (Jerusalem) the holy place of the tabernacles of the Lord rejoice. This clearly is referring to the river of the Millennial kingdom. In the day God in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ will be in the middle of the temple. And therefore the city will not ever be moved. The Lord will help the city – she will never be conquered. The heathens of the nations might rage against Christ and they might mobilize to attack the city but Christ will speak and the mountains will melt at his voice. The Lord will be with his people and he will protect them. Think about that. The nations will be invited to come and see the mighty acts of Christ and what destruction he has brought on the earth. He will make wars to cease altogether from east to west. He will break weapons of war and destroy all military vehicles. Be still and know that Christ is God and he will be revered among the nations. Think of that.
