October 31st Hebrews 5
1: For every high priest taken from
among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer
both gifts and sacrifices for sins: 2: Who can have compassion on the ignorant,
and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with
infirmity. 3: And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for
himself, to offer for sins. 4: And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but
he that is called of God, as was Aaron. 5: So also Christ glorified not himself
to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day
have I begotten thee.
The writer goes on to talk of
Christ’s priestly work. He says, all the high priests are taken from among men
to do the service of God to offer gifts (of worship) and sacrifices for sin.
They are tender toward the ignorant and on those who have slipped off the path
because he is also surrounded by the same weaknesses. And so he offers
sacrifices for himself as well as others. And no man takes the honour of
priesthood to himself but he is chosen of God just as Abraham was. In the same
way Christ did not appoint himself to be High Priest but he was called of God
who said to him, ‘you are my Son, this day l have begotten you’. And so Christ
was not the begotten son because he was the offspring of God – God forbid. But
he was the begotten son because God anointed him.
