October 21st Titus 2

C. Church Teaching & Preaching

Teach the Word of God

1: But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: 2: That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. 3: The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4: That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5: To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. 6: Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. 7: In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8: Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. 9: Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; 10: Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. 11: For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12: Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13: Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14: Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 15: These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Continuing from the previous chapter Paul says to Titus, you speak the things which are conspicuous of healthy teaching. The result of your ministry is that the older men will be sensible, serious, constrained, sound in faith, love and patience. The older women will be the same, they will have a demeanour that is appropriate to the sacred service, not slanderers, nor addicted to alcohol, but teachers of good things to the younger women. That they will also be sensible and to love their husbands and children, to be also discreet, chaste, keepers of the family home, good, obedient to their own husbands so that unbelievers will not curse God. You young men are also to be sensible in your thinking and in everything being a model of good works, genuine in your doctrine, with seriousness and sincerity. Sound in your conversations so that you cannot be accused, so that those who are your opponents may be ashamed by having nothing bad to say about you. Paul says, encourage servants to be obedient to their own masters and to try to please them in everything and not answering back. Not putting their masters use aside for their own possession, but being trustworthy. In this way they dress themselves up in the doctrine of God our Saviour in everything. The unmerited kindness of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, instructing us to refuse all ungodliness and the lusts of this world we should live sensibly, righteously and godly in this present world. And we should be looking for the ‘blessed hope’ which is the glorious appearing of the Great God and or Saviour Jesus Christ (An incidental confirmation of the deity of Christ – he is the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ) He is the one says Paul, who gave himself on our behalf that he might pay the price to set us free from all crookedness and make us pure for himself as his own personal possession, totally devoted to doing good works. Paul closes by saying, Titus these are things you are to teach and encourage and rebuke with all authority - Don’t let anyone look down on you.

  • What should the older Sisters of a church be?
  • How should Titus conduct his ministry?
