Today we begin the
first book of Chronicles. Most people look at the book and grind to a
halt like Christian in the Slough of Despond. By to do so is such a
shame. Most people are interested in their own family tree and this
book begins with a series of family trees listing the ancestors of
Israel. So this bock is not only interesting it is absolutely
essential reading for the Children of Israel. It is their authority,
history and the springboard of their future. The book is divided into
two sections which we might describe as Israel’s origins and the
life of David. These two OT books called the Chronicles were the last
books of the Jewish OT Bible. 1 Chronicles was probably written by
Ezra, in about 430 BC, after the exile. This book is a commentary to
the book of 2 Samuel. This book unifies the nation of Israel, by
tracing the line of David’s ancestors and then showing the
importance of worship to the individual, family and nation. The two
books of Chronicles were one book in the Hebrew Bible. The books of
Chronicles cover much the same time as the books of Kings, but the
books of Chronicles were written looking back after the captivity. In
the books of Kings the palace and the throne are prominent but in
Chronicles the Temple and the altar are prominent.

In today’s
readings we have the Genealogies of Adam, Abraham, Esau, Israel,
Judah, David and Solomon. It’s very interesting that scripture is
very clear that all human being descended from one man – Adam.
Those who take the view that mankind descended from monkeys and
subscribe to the general theory of evolution will find that this
theory runs completely contrary to the word of God. In the first
family list from Adam to Abraham we have described the family of
mankind covering half of the Old Testament. Abraham lives at almost
exactly half way through the OT in terms of time. Next we have the
family tree of Abraham. Nearly all of the Middle Eastern nations come
from Abraham one way or another. Then we notice that the Chronicler
jumps straight to Isaacs’s sons. Esau and Jacob (Israel) All of
this gives the definite impression that the record is meant to be
taken as historically accurate. The details are astounding for
example of Hadad it describes his city, wife – her father and
grandfather and his sons who it says were ‘dukes’. Next we come
to the familiar family of Jacob (Israel) 12 sons in all. Then the
Chronicler will go into great detail listing the families of each of
the Tribes of Israel starting with Judah. He lists the complicated
family relations and a raft of interesting and minutely detailed
information about most of the names. This is the stuff of families.
Then we have the family of David the sweet Psalmist and shepherd of
Judah. And lastly he lists the family of Solomon.
- Why is the Book of Chronicles so important to Israel?
- Why is this book just as important as Genesis?
- What do you notice about these Genealogies?
